December 2019 Update

To my loyal & valued customers,

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all and your families as well. I hope you get to share the season with your loved ones from near and far. Make a memory!

When you wake up tomorrow the ground will probably be white from the seasons’ first snowfall. Cherish the beauty from a freshly fallen shroud of snow.

If you are a snow enthusiast “your season” has arrived. For me it means fires in the fireplace, ramping up my fly tying and attending fly shows.

The shops’ annual Holiday Cheer Day will be held on December 15th at the shop. Please come by for some good food, holiday music, warm and cold drinks and a chance to see people that you haven’t had a moment to “catch up with”.

November 2019 Update

To my loyal & valued customers,

Looking for some “spooky” fish? How about giving the Nissitissit or Squannacook a look. The rivers in southeastern NH have all been stocked with OUTSIZE fish! They are the Lamprey, Cocheco, Isinglas, and Exeter rivers.

I’m heading to the Waloomsac River in Vermont on Monday or Tuesday to fish for wary browns and rainbows that have been in the water since May – they should be real “spooky”!

The waters are waiting, the fish are waiting – What are you waiting for?

Just back from a trip to New Mexico to fish the fabled San Juan River. This is a river you have to fish, sometime before you “hang up your spurs”. Wow, all that was there were big, angry fish. I hate it when that happens.

The shop is loaded with new items. There are large amounts of new waders and boots, volumes of new Croakies and sunglasses as well as fitovers for your prescription glasses. All sorts of new reels and accessories.

Don’t forget to respond to the inquiries that come at Christmas by saying ‘Get me a gift certificate from Evening Sun Fly Shop’. That way you can get what you want to enhance your fishing pleasure. The shop has a lot to offer.

October 2019 Update

To my loyal & valued customers,

Pumpkins, Mums, cooler temps, and diminished humidity – all signs that fall is here. Fishing in our area rivers should pick up as the fall stocking is underway. The Nissitissit River was stocked on 9/27/19 with brows and rainbows and the Squannacook will not be far behind.

Are your waders ready to be worn? Are you wading boots hurting your feet? Does your net have holes in it that shouldn’t be there? These are signs to you that it may be time for a visit to the Evening Sun Fly Shop.

The two fly boxes that were found on the Nissitissit River were reunited with their rightful owner. Thanks to John A. for bringing them in. This is a good example of a fly fisherman being honest and empathetic to other fly people. It is nice to have a local fly shop to assist in recovery efforts.

September 2019 Update

To my loyal & valued customers,  

The month of August weather-wise was in my opinion just dandy. Some crisp mornings accentuated the hots days and provided a respite from the humidity and heat. We are on to September as usually we enjoy some spectacular weather before the snow flies.

Our area rivers are low and warm but still producing some fish. A client came in Thursday and reported that he and another fellow caught several brookies and some nice rainbows on a stretch of the Squannacook. Bonus Time!!

The Swift River is holding up nicely and is providing fish on a daily basis. The flows seem to be steady and about 100+CFS or so. The brook trout are moving in for their fall “urge to merge”. Reports from a few people have indicated that they have landed some brookies in the 8 -10″ range.

I went to the Swift River last week and landed 2 nice fish. My buddy landed one. It was a day well spent in the glorious sunshine standing in 55-58 degree water. As I was fishing and standing in the clear, clean water I wondered “What are the poor people doing”. My experience made me feel richer for having done it.

The Millers River is still holding some nice browns that are rising to some dries. Arrive at 5 pm and fish till dark – 7:30 or so and have a ball for a couple of hours.

The Connecticut River in Pittsburgh, NH. as well as the Saco River in North Conway, NH. are both candidates for you to wet a line over the next couple of months. Come into the shop and get some ideas and directions on where to fish these fine fisheries.

When you are in North Conway stop and see my friend, Steve Angers, who owns the North Country Fly Shop http://www.northcountryangler.com/ and tell him I sent you.

He will give you a free fishing map of the Mount Washington Valley that is chock full of valuable information on fishing in that area. Steve says that the BIG FISH are starting to move during their fall spawning – Big Bright Flies are the order of the day. See Steve for some intel. He’s a great guy and very helpful.

Three Rivers Stocking Group 9th Annual Auction – Sept. 16th

The Three Rivers Stocking Group will be holding their 9th annual fundraising auction/banquet on September 16, 2019. Try to attend as there will be lots of great items for reasonable prices as well as a fine dinner that accompanies the festivities. This group is responsible for stocking the Lamprey, Cocheco, Isinglas and Exeter Rivers in southeast NH. Their efforts allow us to fish these rivers during the fall and early winter. Please support their fundraising efforts by attending and having a fine meal as well as garnering some new items. This group deserves all of our support.

August 2019 Update

To my loyal & valued customers,  

The water temps are closely resembling the air temps on our area streams and rivers. Fishing has slowed down most places except for the Swift and Deerfield.

The Farmington in Connecticut is also worth a days’ trip as nice browns and rainbows are being netted daily. The flows on the Swift River are really engaging as they hover between 50-100 CFS daily.

It is truly our summertime oasis! Reports of 8-12 fish per day are not uncommon from many of the seasoned anglers who visit the river weekly.

Come get your share of fun, and poke a few nice fish as you leave your cares where they belong when you fish — Behind you!!

I’m just back from a short trip to Montana on the Bighorn River in Fort Smith. We had to employ the use of drift boats for 3+ days as the water was 9500 CFS. A good flow is 3000+ CFS.

The boat got us to great spots where we could anchor and fish in some knee-deep water. There were 4 of us on the trip and I can safely say over the duration of our trip we hooked/netted over 200+ fish with none smaller than 15″. The largest and there were many this size was 19″. Browns and Rainbows were the order of the day. What a trip!!

Rivers Report:

Pittsburgh, NH – Home of the trophy stretch on the Connecticut River is also producing nice size Brookies, Browns, Rainbows and Salmon.

Below Murphy Dam is also yielding some very large Browns. Below Murphy’s is clear cold water and a haven for some surprisingly large fish. 

As you can see there are still places to have a great time and all you need is the inspiration to travel there and have yourself a day or two to remember. Get out and make a memory!

July 2019 Update

To my loyal & valued customers,  Happy 4th of July to all and your families. Our freedom as a nation cannot be understated! Thanks to all who have fought to make this country what it is today!!

The fly shop is playing CUPID! Want to fish new water? Want to find some new guys/woman to fish with? Want to do all this reasonably and not break the bank? Rivers Report:

The area rivers are beginning to recede. The warm weather is on our doorstep(s). Get your piece of what is left out here and get on the rivers, streams, ponds, etc. before Mother Nature shuts off the opportunity.

The Nissitissit and Squannacook are still yielding some nice fish.

The Swift River is our area oasis, with cold, clean water, large salmon and rainbows, some brook trout being the order of the day. 

The Millers River is coming down and is a solid place to spend a day. Check Ken Elmer’s blog https://millersriverflyfishingforum.blogspot.com/ for up to date info.

Up north the Waloomsac River in Bennington, VT. and the Black River in Weathersfield, VT. are places to catch large angry trout.

Pittsburgh, NH – The Connecticut River is on fire. Many large brook trout are being brought to net along with some fine rainbows and salmon.

Call the shop for details on any of these rivers. I recently spent 1 1/2 days on the Waloomsac River and netted 20+ Rainbows and Browns in the range of 14″ – 19″/ Luck was on my side.

Fireworks were first used to celebrate July Fourth in 1777. Congress chose fireworks as a way to celebrate the first anniversary. They were ignited over Philadelphia. The celebration also included bonfires and bells.

Good News: Lost & Found Items

The two fly boxes that were found on the Nissitissit River were reunited with their rightful owner. Thanks to John A. for bringing them in. This is a good example of a fly fisherman being honest and empathetic to other fly people. It is nice to have a local fly shop to assist in recovery efforts.
